Supporting Students with Maths Anxiety: Strategies for Calm and Confidence

Posted on:

Maths anxiety is a real and often overlooked challenge that affects students’ confidence and performance. It can manifest as worry, avoidance, or even physical symptoms when faced with numerical tasks. This anxiety can interfere with both learning and assessment—especially for students with dyscalculia or generalised anxiety.

Understanding Maths Anxiety

Maths anxiety is not about lack of ability. Many students with strong reasoning skills still experience stress due to negative past experiences, pressure to perform, or a fast-paced curriculum.

Strategies That Help:

  • Slow down the pace: Allow time for understanding without the stress of speed.
  • Use multisensory methods: Incorporate physical manipulatives, drawing, and movement.
  • Encourage a growth mindset: Emphasise effort and learning over “right answers.”
  • Normalise mistakes: Treat errors as a valuable part of the learning process.

Reducing pressure, providing reassurance, and creating a supportive maths environment can help students build not only competence but also confidence.
